Martine Elliott Dip HE (Open) is an abstract landscape painter based in Exeter.

For more than two decades, landscape was something she encountered from 35,000 feet. During a 23-year career as cabin crew with British Airways, coastlines, cities and mountain ranges appeared briefly before dissolving into cloud, distance and memory. Never still, never fully knowable, they became impressions rather than destinations.

That experience continues to shape her paintings. Built through layers of colour, gestural marks and shifting patterns, they occupy the space between what is seen and what is remembered. Rather than describing a particular place, Elliott creates landscapes that have slipped free of geography and where movement, atmosphere and recollection become the terrain itself.

Influenced by the ornamental intensity of Gustav Klimt and the expansive energy of Joan Mitchell, her work balances moments of structure with passages of instinct and disruption. Colour and texture become a way of holding onto fleeting experience, suggesting that landscape is never simply somewhere we arrive, but something that continues to evolve within us.

Her paintings invite viewers to inhabit that uncertain space between the aerial and the intimate, where abstraction allows landscape to remain fluid, unstable and endlessly becoming.
